Some iconic architecture in the city center

I can’t believe the time has already come to return home. It seems like just yesterday, I was saying goodbye to my family in the US, feeling nervous and excited about the semester ahead. Studying abroad in Madrid has been an extraordinary experience; I am so grateful and fortunate to have spent the past four months immersing myself in Spanish culture. I have greatly improved my Spanish language skills, navigated new environments, and learned much about myself. I’ve been able to try adventurous activities, taste many different foods, and see the most beautiful sights. Here, I will mention some of the highlights and my top picks for 10 categories:

1. Most beautiful landscapes: Switzerland. The train ride into Interlaken brought us by gorgeous blue lakes and the most stunning mountains I had ever seen. Skiing in Grindelwald was a very special experience–the 360° mountain view was truly spectacular and unlike anything I had seen before.

2. Most impressive natural wonders: Iceland. Seeing the northern lights was a bucket list item for me, and they exceeded my expectations. All the waterfalls, the lagoons, and the ice glaciers were incredible sights–super beautiful and almost unreal. It felt otherworldly in the best way possible.

3. Best beaches: Mallorca. We rented a car and drove around the whole island. On the north side, there are tons of tiny coves with beautiful blue water. It was a bit chilly in May, but refreshing nonetheless. I will say, driving was somewhat scary since all the roads are curvy and shared with a million bikers. But the sandy beaches (and rocky beaches) are definitely worth the visit.

4. Best landmarks: Budapest. I was very impressed with the historical sites and architecture in this city. The Hungarian Parliament Building, especially at night, was super pretty (we saw it from a riverboat ride). The Fisherman’s Bastion was my favorite, which also included a great view of the Parliament. Buda Castle, St. Stephen’s Basilica, and the Chain Bridge were all amazing sights with interesting history. Also worth mentioning are the thermal baths, which are very unique and relaxing!

5. Best local cuisine: Italy. Out of all the cuisines, I would usually not choose Italian over many others. However, the quality of the food in Florence and Naples was incredible. The ingredients were so fresh, and I could tell nearly everything I tasted was homemade. I ate so much pizza, pasta, and gelato during my days in Italy, I could probably be okay without it for the next year. But it was so worth it (and cheap too).

6. Friendliest locals: Ireland. We traveled to Dublin during St. Patrick’s Day weekend, and everyone we met was happy, laid back, and seemed to be loving the festivities. We also took a day trip to the Cliffs of Moher, and our Irish guide was super helpful and upbeat. We loved the vibes in Ireland, and the people were so warm and welcoming.

7. Cutest city: Amsterdam. All the canals and colorful houses on the water were adorable and made the city feel very authentic. There were so many little boats cruising through the canals, making for a unique and peaceful experience. There were also many open spaces with green grass to hang out and picnic with friends.

8. Most charming city: Prague. The ancient architecture and artwork in this city are so beautiful. It felt like we were in a fairytale. We joined a walking tour through the Prague Castle area, and it was amazing (although it was pouring rain). The astronomical clock tower in the Old Town is also super cool, and we watched the bell show on the hour. Charles Bridge is very impressive, as well, with many statues lining the path.

9. Most unique: Morocco. This was my first time visiting the continent of Africa, and I was pleasantly surprised. The culture and lifestyle were the most different from anywhere I visited during my semester abroad, and I really enjoyed it. We got the opportunity to ride camels through the Sahara desert and spend a night camping in the dunes. It was incredible and I am very grateful to have had the chance to try Moroccan foods, visit beautiful landmarks, and learn about the culture.

10. Overall favorite: Madrid. I am so happy I chose to study abroad in Madrid for many reasons. Madrid is located very centrally, so it was simple to travel around nearly anywhere. The transportation system was super easy and convenient–I really grew to love the metro and will definitely miss it. The lifestyle is laid back, focused on friends and family, and very different from the United States. Even at super late hours of the night, you will find Spanish locals enjoying each other’s company at a restaurant, in no rush at all. There is a larger sense of community and happiness overall, which was a great change of pace. Madrid has many historical and iconic landmarks, but tourists do not dominate the city. It feels authentic, and I truly got to immerse myself in the culture (and practice my Spanish). There are many green parks (like Retiro), so many dogs walking around, and amazing food to try. Living in Madrid was a very unique and incredible experience. It will forever hold a special place in my heart, and I know I will return in the future.
